National Day for Truth and Reconciliation

September 30 is a day to honour the survivors of residential schools, remember the children who never came home, and recognize the strength and resilience of Indigenous peoples. It is a time for reflection, conversation, and action — together, we take steps toward truth, healing, and reconciliation.

Join the Spirit of the Children Society in New Westminster as we come together to honour the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. This gathering is an opportunity to reflect, learn, and stand in solidarity with Indigenous communities.

Highlights

Honouring Dorothy & William Visser
With deep respect, Dorothy and William Visser are named Head Woman and Head Man for the event.

• Dorothy Visser was a nehiyaw (Cree) Elder from Saddle Lake Cree Nation and a survivor of the residential school system. She dedicated her life to preserving and teaching Cree language and culture, and was recognized nationally for her decades of volunteer work and leadership.
• William Visser was a dedicated community leader and advocate, supporting cultural preservation and education alongside Dorothy. He shared his knowledge of Cree traditions, guided younger generations, and contributed decades of leadership and volunteer work to strengthen community connections.

In Indigenous traditions, the Head Woman and Head Man guide ceremonies, share teachings, and help ensure that the event respects community values. Though both have passed away, their wisdom and legacy continue to inspire this gathering.

Buffalo Thunder Group
Experience the powerful energy of the Buffalo Thunder Group, a traditional drumming and dance circle. Their songs and dances honour Indigenous teachings, celebrate resilience, and bring people together in community.
