The purpose of this campaign is not simply to celebrate newcomers. It is to demonstrate how welcoming and belonging create the conditions for people to contribute their gifts, talents, and experiences to community life.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The campaign also supports the vision of the Will You Be My Neighbour? initiative, which encourages residents to recognize the people around them who help create belonging in New Westminster.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Will You Be My Neighbour? project envisions a community where everyone belongs and where meaningful connections strengthen community well-being, one story, one moment, one neighbour at a time.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

For Mary Chuy Romo, it starts with creating opportunities for people to connect. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Originally from Mexico and a New Westminster resident for 21 years, Mary Chuy shared that she is most proud of creating spaces where newcomers, immigrants, and families can come together, celebrate their culture, build connections, and feel that they belong. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Through cultural events, community initiatives, networking opportunities, immigration information sessions, and workshops, she has helped people connect with one another, learn about life in Canada, and become more involved in their community. She is also proud of supporting entrepreneurs and small businesses as they grow and become part of the local community. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mary Chuy is also the Founder and Executive Director of \u201cComunidad Mexicana en Vancouver Services Society\u201d, through which she helps create opportunities for Mexican families and newcomers to connect, access information, celebrate their culture, and build a stronger sense of belonging. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

For Mary Chuy, belonging is not only about feeling welcome. It is about having the knowledge, connections, and opportunities to build a successful life and contribute to the place you call home. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

For Noni, it inspired her to give back. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Originally from Kenya and a New Westminster resident for eight years, Noni shared that finding connection through community groups encouraged her to become more involved through volunteering and community engagement. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

She is proud of her participation in Community Assembly, Community Action Network, Will You Be My Neighbour, and other community engagement activities that bring people together and strengthen community connections. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Noni believes that inclusion is a right. Through her volunteer efforts and community involvement, she hopes to help people feel more connected, welcomed, and included in community life. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

For Johanna Pabon, it starts with connection. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Originally from Venezuela and a New Westminster resident for seven years, Johanna shared that she is most proud of helping New Westies feel more connected to their city by connecting them with local events, programs, institutions, and, most importantly, with one another. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Through her community work and social media, she helps make information more accessible and encourages people to participate, get involved, and feel that they are truly part of New Westminster. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Johanna is also proud to have helped champion the proclamation of Latin American Heritage Month in New Westminster, creating greater recognition of the contributions, culture, and diversity of the Latin American community while building understanding and connection across the city. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

For Monica Yardeng, it starts with helping people find the information and resources they need. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Originally from South Sudan and a New Westminster resident for 16 years, Monica is proud of her work as a community resource volunteer supporting newcomers, seniors, people seeking housing, and individuals accessing food support programs. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Through her volunteer efforts, she helps connect people to services, information, and community resources that can make a difference in their daily lives. After becoming involved through her church community and later joining the Community Action Network (CAN), Monica expanded her role in helping residents navigate available supports and feel more connected to their community. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

For Monica, inclusion means ensuring that people know where to go for help, have access to opportunities, and feel that they are not facing challenges alone. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

For Adriana, it starts with listening. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Originally from Mexico, Adriana is proud of supporting families by listening to their needs, connecting them with community resources, and helping parents build confidence, strengthen family relationships, and feel more connected to their community. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

As a newcomer herself, Adriana understands that navigating a new country, language, and systems can be challenging. Through her work, she has helped bridge language and cultural barriers by ensuring that families feel heard, understood, and welcomed. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Working closely with families inspired her to continue helping others beyond her professional role. Through community involvement, she has had the opportunity to build meaningful relationships with community members and colleagues who are committed to making New Westminster a welcoming place for everyone. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

What helps people build a life and a sense of belonging in a new community?<\/strong> <\/p>\n\n\n\n

For Yodit Habte, it starts with connection. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Originally from Ethiopia and Eritrea and a resident of Canada for eight years, Yodit is proud of her volunteer work supporting women, newcomers, and families through community engagement, advocacy, and outreach.   <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Her journey began as a newcomer volunteer with ISSofBC, where she supported others as a translator and co-facilitator. Over time, she became involved with Family Services of Greater Vancouver, New West Family Place, and the Community Connector Project, helping newcomers connect with information, services, resources, and opportunities within the community. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Beyond volunteering, Yodit has become a strong advocate for immigrant and refugee women. She has worked to raise awareness about the importance of accessible childcare and represented her leadership group in discussions with the Minister of Children and Family Development, sharing the experiences and recommendations of women in her community. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Yodit also stepped forward to support residents affected by the recent fire in New Westminster, helping community members connect with Emergency Support Services and navigate available supports during a difficult time. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

For Yodit, one connection can open the door to information, support, confidence, and opportunity. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

For Zahra Hashemi, it starts with creating opportunities for people to connect. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Originally from Afghanistan and a New Westminster resident for more than four years, Zahra is proud of the community initiatives she has led to support newcomers, celebrate diversity, and foster belonging. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

One of her most meaningful projects was organizing the Donate to Newcomers<\/strong> event at Mount Zion Lutheran Church. Working alongside more than 30 volunteers, the initiative welcomed over 100 newcomers and provided donated items, resources, and opportunities for community connection. She also organized a World Refugee Day multicultural event<\/strong>, featuring an art exhibition and fashion show that celebrated cultural diversity and brought people together through learning and shared experiences. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Beyond community events, Zahra is a recipient of a 2023 Community Grant and Certificate of Honor<\/strong>, recognized by MLA Jennifer Whiteside for her community involvement. She is also an active member of P.E.O. International, Chapter B<\/strong>, supporting women’s education and opportunities. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Zahra believes in focusing on people’s strengths rather than their challenges. Through her work, she has seen newcomers build confidence, develop new relationships, discover opportunities, and become active contributors to their community. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Meet Shaima: Bringing Seniors Together, One Connection at a Time <\/h1>\n\n\n\n

What helps seniors stay connected, active, and engaged in their community?<\/strong> <\/p>\n\n\n\n

For Shaima, it starts with one connection at a time. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Originally from Afghanistan and a New Westminster resident for more than five years, Shaima is proud of her long-standing volunteer work with the seniors’ group at Umbrella Multicultural Health Co-op. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Inspired by the importance of community support, Shaima became involved in volunteering and helping others feel connected and included. In addition to her work in New Westminster, she also volunteers in Richmond, supporting newcomer women. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Through the seniors’ group she facilitates, participants learn about health and wellness, active living, healthy eating, and how to communicate with service providers. They take part in knitting, sewing, crafts, and field trips, while building friendships and confidence along the way. The group also helps seniors connect with family doctors and other important community resources. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

One of Shaima’s proudest achievements is seeing the group grow from just eight participants to approximately fifty seniors. Even more rewarding has been watching some participants become community leaders and support others. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

For Shaima, every friendship built, every outing shared, and every new leader who emerges is proof that no one is ever too old to learn, connect, and contribute. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

For Sophie, one opportunity led to another. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Originally from Viet Nam, Sophie arrived in Canada as an international student in 2023. Remembering how challenging it was to navigate a new education system and environment, she wanted to help make the journey easier for other students. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Through volunteering with Student Life, Douglas College International, the Douglas Students’ Union, and the Career Centre, Sophie has helped students find resources, build connections, and feel more confident in their new community. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Her involvement eventually expanded beyond campus to the City of New Westminster and the New Westminster Chamber of Commerce, where she contributed to many community projects, including neighbourhood beautification initiatives. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

In 2025, Sophie received Douglas College’s Up and Coming Student Leader of the Year Award<\/strong>, recognizing her dedication to supporting others and strengthening the student community. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

For Sophie, even small acts of support can have a lasting impact. One connection can lead to another, creating a ripple effect that reaches far beyond a single person. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

For Diana Silva, it creates opportunities, supports local initiatives, and contributes to New Westminster’s economy. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Originally from the Philippines, Diana is proud of opening the second New Westminster location of Cake It Easy<\/strong>. What started as a home-based business has grown into a successful local enterprise that creates jobs, supports community events, and adds to the variety of products available in the city. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Through her business, Diana has introduced Filipino desserts and specialty products to New Westminster while supporting local fundraisers and community initiatives. Her business contributes to the local economy while giving residents more options and a wider range of products to enjoy and explore. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Diana has also shared her entrepreneurial journey with others. She was invited to participate in “An Afternoon with Filipino Women Entrepreneurs,”<\/strong> hosted by the Philippine Consulate General, where she spoke about her experience as a business owner. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

When the Filipino community was impacted by the tragedy at the Lapu-Lapu Festival, Diana witnessed the generosity of the New Westminster community and was grateful to be part of efforts that supported those affected. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

For Diana, growth is not only measured by a second storefront. It is also about creating opportunities for others, supporting the local economy, and building a business that gives back to the community. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Originally from Nigeria, Ugochi understands how overwhelming it can feel to arrive in a new country without family, friends, or a support network nearby. Through community programs, she found guidance, information, and people who understood the journey she was experiencing. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

That experience inspired her to give back. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ugochi became involved in volunteering and mentorship, helping newcomers navigate their new environment, reconnect with their professional goals, and access the information and resources they need to settle successfully. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

One contribution she is especially proud of is participating in mentorship programs that support newcomers as they build their lives in Canada. Through sharing knowledge, encouragement, and practical guidance, she has helped others feel more confident and connected as they begin their own journeys. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

For Ugochi, community support is one of the most important gifts a newcomer can receive. She believes that when people help one another, they create a stronger community for everyone. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Elsie is proud to be a community connector for immigrants, newcomers, and visitors in New Westminster. By helping people get to know their community, build friendships, and connect with local activities and resources, she helps ensure that no one has to navigate a new place alone.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

What began as a desire to support others inspired Elsie to become more involved in organizing community gatherings, cultural events, and opportunities for people to meet and build meaningful relationships. Along the way, she discovered that community building starts with listening to and understanding people’s experiences, challenges, and goals.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Through her work, newcomers, immigrants, international visitors, and their families have been able to access support, make friends, and become more engaged in community life. Her efforts have also helped strengthen connections across cultures and create a more welcoming and inclusive New Westminster.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n
