Join us! Membership to all working groups is open to everyone.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Finding suitable employment is a priority for newcomers. justify-content: space-evenly; width: 100%; flex-flow: wrap;\">\n<p class=\"p1 borders\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong><em>Did you know that 37% of New <\/em><\/strong><\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong><em>West\u2019s population have a mother <\/em><\/strong><\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong><em>tongue other than English or French?<\/em><\/strong><\/span> <br \/>Hiring a skilled worker fluent in other <br \/>languages increases communication <br \/>options and lets employers tap into <br \/>new markets.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1 borders\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><em><strong>Did you know immigrants are highly<\/strong><\/em><\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><em><strong>educated<\/strong><\/em>?<\/span> 58% of recent immigrants <br \/>25-64 years old have a bachelor\u2019s <br \/>degree or higher. They are prepared <br \/>to meet job shortages and want to <br \/>integrate quickly into the labour force<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"p1 borders\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><em><strong>Did you know that for every 10% increase in immigration, exports increase by 1%?<\/strong><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Activities have also revolved around Networking and connecting newcomers with employers.<\/p>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The concept of networking is not universally understood. Newcomers often lack connections and opportunities to network. In early 2020, working group members from WorkBC Employment Services New Westminster, Douglas College, S.U.C.C.E.S.S., Purpose Society, and a community volunteer pulled together a panel of employers from child care, construction and the City of New Westminster to talk to newcomers about how to find employment within their sector. Participants explored employment rights, human rights protections, discrimination, workplace standards, and responses to workplace harassment through interactive learning and discussion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<details class=\"wp-block-details is-layout-flow wp-block-details-is-layout-flow\"><summary>WINS LIP and the Justice Education Society of BC hosted a free three-day online workshop series to help participants better understand workplace rights and behaviour in BC. The interactive sessions provided practical knowledge, resources, and opportunities to strengthen support for newcomers and immigrants in our communities.<br><\/summary>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The series was designed for settlement practitioners, case managers, frontline workers, program coordinators, facilitators, community workers, community navigators, and advocates.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Session 1: Basic BC Employment Law<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Date:<\/strong> April 8, 2026<br>Topics included:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Key workplace rights (pay, hours, safety)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>What is legally required at work<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Recognizing potential legal issues<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Session 2: The BC Human Rights Code<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Date:<\/strong> April 22, 2026<br>Topics included:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Protected grounds and accommodation<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Discrimination and workplace rights<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Employment standards vs. human rights<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Session 3: Responding to Sexual Harassment<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Date:<\/strong> May 13, 2026<br>Topics included:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Recognizing sexual harassment<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Power dynamics and disclosure<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Safe responses and referral options<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This workshop series highlighted the importance of understanding workplace rights and protections so that newcomers and immigrants can access accurate information, navigate unfamiliar workplace systems, and build safe and successful employment experiences in British Columbia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Partners:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Justice Education Society of British Columbia (JES)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>New Westminster WINS LIP Employment Working Group<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/details>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Interested in shaping the future of work in our community?
