Online Workshop Series for Settlement Service Providers
Hosted by the New Westminster WINS LIP Employment Working Group and the Justice Education Society of BC (JES)

This free three-part online workshop series helped settlement service providers build confidence in supporting clients with complex workplace concerns. Participants explored employment rights, human rights protections, discrimination, workplace standards, and responses to workplace harassment through interactive learning and discussion.

The series was designed for settlement practitioners, case managers, frontline workers, program coordinators, facilitators, community workers, community navigators, and advocates.

Session 1: Basic BC Employment Law

Date: April 8, 2026
Topics included:

  • Key workplace rights (pay, hours, safety)
  • What is legally required at work
  • Recognizing potential legal issues

Session 2: The BC Human Rights Code

Date: April 22, 2026
Topics included:

  • Protected grounds and accommodation
  • Discrimination and workplace rights
  • Employment standards vs. human rights

Session 3: Responding to Sexual Harassment

Date: May 13, 2026
Topics included:

  • Recognizing sexual harassment
  • Power dynamics and disclosure
  • Safe responses and referral options

This workshop series highlighted the importance of understanding workplace rights and protections so that newcomers and immigrants can access accurate information, navigate unfamiliar workplace systems, and build safe and successful employment experiences in British Columbia.
