City of New Westminster โ Planning and Social Planning
The City of New Westminster, through its Planning and Social Planning Department, plays a key leadership role in building an inclusive, connected, and resilient community. Operating under municipal government, the department works on long-term planning, social policy, and community development to respond to the needs of residents.
The City has been a central partner in many local initiatives that support inclusion and belonging. Itย chairs the WINS Local Immigration Partnership (WINS LIP), bringing together organizations, institutions, and community members to improve coordination, reduce barriers, and support newcomer integration in New Westminster.
What makes the Cityโs role distinct is its strong commitment to equity and collaboration. Over the years, it has led and supported key initiatives such as:
- Theย Sanctuary City Policy, ensuring all residents can access services without fear, regardless of immigration status
- The development of theย Welcome Centreย in partnership with School District 40
- Community-driven initiatives and events that promote inclusion, such as intercultural festivals and engagement networks
- Aย Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Anti-Racism frameworkย to guide its workย [
The City is also part of theย Strong Cities Network, a global network of municipalities working to address hate, extremism, and polarization while strengthening community belonging and social cohesion.ย
Through these efforts, the Planning and Social Planning team helps coordinate across sectors, align policies with community needs, and create opportunities for collaboration. Their work goes beyond city servicesโthey act as a connector and facilitator, helping organizations and residents work together toward a more inclusive and welcoming New Westminster.
